Air-Conditioner
According to National Environment Agency’s (NEA) mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme, the number of green ticks reflects the energy efficiency of different air-condition. The lesser the ticks, the more energy is consumed thus incurring higher costs. A label with 5-ticks is the most efficient.
COP and EEF refer to the heating and cooling efficiency of air-conditioners. They indicate the ratio of heating or cooling provided by a unit relative to the amount of electrical input required to generate it. The higher the ratio, the lower the consumption of electricity, the lower the electricity bill.
Prior to 2021, R410A refrigerant is widely used as a refrigerant in many air-conditioners in Singapore. However, due to the phasing out and ban of the supply for R410a air-conditioners that will take effect from Q4 2022, many air-conditioners brands had started to introduce R32 range of product to the consumer.
R32 is a common refrigerant that is used in various heating ventilation air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and is efficient in conveying heat. It can lower electricity consumption up to an estimate of 10% compared to air-conditioners that use refrigerant R410a. R32 has a global warming potential (GWP) of 675, which is nearly a third lower. Thus, it is a lower environmental burden.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) will progressively phasing out and ban the supply of air-conditioner that uses the R410A refrigerant from Q4 2022 for climate-friendly alternative such as R32.
Environmental-friendly:
It has a lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 which is 1,413 lower than that of R410A. The higher GWP, the more likely the gas is to cause overall temperature to rise.
It has an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0! The ODP tells us how hazardous a gas is to ozone layer.
The R32 refrigerant is a single component refrigerant, which it makes it recyclable. The R410A refrigerant which is a blended refrigerant.
Cost Savings R32 systems use up to 20% less refrigerant compared to R410A, making them more efficient and cheaper to use.
Guide to Buying Air-Conditioner
In order to choose a suitable air-conditioner for your house, you will need to consider:
- The size areas or the number of rooms that require air-conditioning.
- The frequency and length of time the air-conditioning is required.
You may use the table below as a guide. It will be most ideal to discuss with an air-conditioning specialist to determine the cooling capacity required.
Table showing the capacity of air-conditioner needed to cool the room area
- Noise levels: an average inverter air-conditioner models operate on 19dB.
- Energy Efficiency: You should look out for the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) Energy Label. This labelling scheme operates on a “Tick-Rating System where it ranges from 1-tick (least energy efficient) to 5-tick (most energy efficient).
Additional features that will suit your needs:
- 3D Airflow: louvres moving both horizontally and vertically will be able to provide you with greater coverage all around the room.
- Sleep mode: Our bodies generally require less cooling when we are asleep. This mode will regulate the air around you throughout the night automatically and increase the temperature by 0.5 to 1 degree per hour, up to a maximum of +2 degrees without you even noticing it. This way, you will be assured a more comfortable sleep throughout the night without overcooling that might awaken you. It will also help in reducing the unnecessary wastage of energy consumption.
- Aesthetics to blend in with the home design.
- A price that suits your budget.
- Responsive after-sales support.
Knowing Your Air-Conditioner
Air-conditioner these days can last between 10-15 years. The health and efficiency of your air-conditioner depends on a number of factors, such as frequency of use and the maintenance of the unit.
Below are the common scenarios where air-conditioner replacement are considered:
Frequent service calls Expensive repair bills Uneven temperatures Inability to stay at the thermostat’s temperature setting New or increased noises Increase in energy bills Excessive humidity inside your home Desire to be more energy efficient

You can choose a System 5 where one outdoor unit can be connected to 5 indoor units to serve 5 rooms. There would not be a need to install more than 1 outdoor unit. A point to note on the maximum cooling capacity performance of the outdoor unit is that the design was derived in accordance with HDB guidelines, it is recommended not to keep all indoor units in operation at the same time as this will drastically reduce each indoor unit performance.
Regular servicing of your air conditioner by qualified technician is advised to ensure optimal performance, cooling efficiency, and longevity. Quarterly servicing is recommended for units used daily. Neglecting maintenance may lead to reduced lifespan due to increased strain on the system, potential issues like clogged cooling coils and blower, risks such as water leakage and unpleasant odor, etc. Additionally, it can diminish performance and cooling efficiency.
Water dripping from the Outdoor Units is a common occurrence, resulting from condensation when warm, humid air meets the cold piping of the units.
In rare cases, extra measures might be necessary to address water dripping from the Outdoor Units. It is advisable to reach out to the Air Conditioner installer to have a drainage method installed, ensuring that water dripping doesn’t impact your neighbours.
Modern days air-conditioner system usually operates with minimal power consumption in standby mode. It is advisable to minimize frequent shutdowns using the main power supply, except when necessary for servicing and repairs. Doing so can potentially cause the following problems:
- Damage to the PCB circuitry leading to premature breakdown.
- Disruption of refrigerant and oil return to the compressor, impacting system operation.
